Art

Studio Art builds artistic skills and behaviors through hands-on projects, art history exploration, and problem-solving.  Techniques in drawing, painting, and printmaking are emphasized.

National Visual Arts Standards

  • Creating: generate ideas for art; develop artwork; refine finished product.

  • Presenting: select artwork for display; develop artistic techniques in artwork to display; convey meaning with artwork.

  • Responding: analyze artwork; interpret intent and meaning in artwork; apply criteria to evaluate artwork.

  • Connecting: attach artistic ideas and works to societal, cultural, and historical context for deeper understanding; synthesize knowledge and personal experiences to make art.

Requirements

  • Homework:  In our flipped art studio, students prepare for class time by watching brief homework videos BEFORE they come to class.  One or two questions accompany the videos, which can be found on Canvas.  There are eight grades for this activity per grading quarter.

  • Bellwork:  At the beginning of each class, students transition from their social hallway selves into a more focused classroom mindset by examining art vocabulary in Canvas.  The activity takes just a few moments to complete.  No more than thirty of these assignments are graded each quarter.

  • Classwork:  Projects are when the magic happens!  Students use their creativity and tenacity to demonstrate mastery of skills and concepts.  We spend 2-3 weeks on each of the three project opportunities.  It is crucial that students use their studio time wisely.

  • Assessments:  There are three formal assessments per grading quarter.  These multiple-choice tests on Canvas check for increased student understanding of vocabulary, art history, and other classroom topics.

Expectations

  • Be here.  After-school detention is assigned to students who repeatedly (3x) cannot find their seats when the tardy bell rings.  Excessive absences lessen the probability of student success.

  • Be responsible.  Bring what is needed (charged laptop, sharpened pencil, etc.) to every class meeting.  Turn in work on time so that grades accurately reflect progress in the course.

  • Be respectful.  Treat students, teachers, and guests with courtesy.  Swearing and other inappropriate actions do not contribute to a positive learning environment.  Per school policy, technology devices that are ill-used will be confiscated and parents notified.

  • Be awesome.  Thinking deeply, taking risks, and focusing on the work to be completed not only earn the best possible grades, but also make for a fun art class!
